Nicola Emmanuelle Performance

“On the afternoon of Saturday 3rd September the hall played host to three fine professional musicians: a pianist, double bass player and drummer, plus singer Nicola Emmanuelle performing her tribute to Ella Fitzgerald.

I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon although I cannot say my music collection includes any Ella Fitzgerald so I can’t recall any of the songs – only some of Nicola’s anecdotes!

She told of how her father – a famous African musician – was still owed millions by his record company. When I heard this I was hoping that it would be Hugh Mazekela as I have one of his records! Sadly, when she mentioned the name I did not know it.

Now I do have Pete Townsend in my music collection so was on the edge of my seat hearing how Nicola met this icon of 60’s and 70’s rock music. Apparently, having been impressed by Nicola he asked her to give him a call. He only had a £5 note to write on so she told him to write the number on the fiver. Once home she had the £5 note framed and put it up on her wall. However a few days later she needed the money and so took it down and spent it!

We all had a wonderful afternoon and enjoyed the tea and cakes. Many thanks to Tom Rand for organising the event. Unfortunately Tom is leaving the village for pastures new so this well-known character will be sadly missed. All proceeds went to the new village hall fund. £400 was raised. Good luck in your new home Tom!”
